For centuries, the British military has been lionized as a force for good in the world. From the Battle of Waterloo to the Second World War, British soldiers have fought and died for freedom and democracy. But behind this façade of heroism lies a darker history, one that is filled with war crimes, atrocities, and human rights abuses.

In his groundbreaking new book, Britannia Tarnished Laurels, historian James Owen exposes this dark underbelly of British military history. Drawing on a wealth of original research, Owen uncovers a litany of abuses that have been largely forgotten or whitewashed.

Owen's book begins with the Amritsar Massacre of 1919, in which British troops fired into a crowd of unarmed Indian civilians, killing hundreds. He then goes on to document the use of torture and summary executions by British forces during the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya in the 1950s. Owen also reveals the role that British soldiers played in the slave trade and the colonization of Africa.

Britannia Tarnished Laurels is a powerful and disturbing book that forces us to confront the dark side of British military history. It is a book that will challenge our assumptions and make us question the true nature of British imperialism.
