They Also Served is the autobiography of a Wellington bomber pilot who flew with Bomber Command during World War II. He describes his experiences in training, on operations, and as a prisoner of war.
The author, John Hemingway, was born in 1921 and joined the Royal Air Force in 1940. He trained as a pilot and was posted to Bomber Command in 1942. He flew his first operation in May 1942 and went on to complete 30 operations over Germany and occupied Europe.
In September 1942, Hemingway's aircraft was shot down over Germany and he was taken prisoner. He spent the rest of the war in a POW camp in Poland. He was liberated in May 1945 and returned to England.
After the war, Hemingway continued to serve in the RAF until 1948. He then worked as a commercial pilot and later as a teacher. He died in 2007.
They Also Served is a fascinating and moving account of the experiences of a Bomber Command pilot during World War II. Hemingway writes with honesty and humor about his training, his operations, and his time as a POW. He also provides a valuable insight into the lives of the men who flew with Bomber Command.
They Also Served is a must-read for anyone interested in World War II, aviation, or military history.
